When I first contacted Community Legal Aid SoCal in 2023, I had just been served with a Summons and Complaint for a debt of approximately $7,000. I am a Vietnamese-only speaking client with very limited income, living on housing assistance while also caring for my terminally ill spouse and my minor child. Receiving legal papers was frightening and overwhelming, and I did not know where to turn help.

The situation was especially difficult because the debt was the result of unauthorized purchases made by a family member without my knowledge. Even though the debt was not truly mine, I faced a very hard decision. I did not want to pursue certain legal options that might harm my family member, so I chose to focus on resolving the matter. I knew I needed guidance, but navigating the legal system felt impossible because of the language barrier and my financial situation.

From the moment I contacted Community Legal Aid SoCal, I felt supported. When I called the Vietnamese language line, I was quickly connected with the Consumer Defense Unit. I was treated with kindness, patience, and respect. Having access to services in my own language made a tremendous difference. I am especially grateful for the help of one of the Vietnamese translators, Kate, whose assistance ensured that I could fully understand every step of the process and communicate my concerns. The team’s support made me feel heard and reassured during a very difficult time.

The Consumer Defense team guided me through every stage of my case. With their help in filing my answer and providing me representation, I was able to gain valuable time to gather the funds needed to resolve the case. Because of their support and guidance, I was able to ultimately reach an agreement and have the case dismissed.

The level of care, professionalism, and dedication I received from CLA SoCal was truly remarkable. At the time when I felt scared and overwhelmed, their team gave me hope and helped me understand my options.
