A story from the Housing Unit —

Frances (fictitious name), a woman in her 50s, was living alone on a Section 8 voucher in an apartment in Orange County when she contacted CLA SoCal in a state of distress. She had just learned from the property manager that the Housing Authority failed to pay their portion of her rent for the past seven months. Her landlord was threatening her with eviction, and she was confused about her rights and at a loss about how to respond.

CLA SoCal Housing Unit supervising attorney Alisha Saska took her case and reached out to the Housing Authority. After a series of email exchanges and overcoming an issue with the landlord not submitting required paperwork to the Housing Authority, Alisha was able to get them to pay the past due rent of $11,000. As a result, a relieved Frances was able to stay in her unit, her home, which is an outcome that would have been very difficult for her to achieve without Alisha’s assistance.
